About this course

Most PLC training teaches you software. This teaches you the controller.

You start with the fundamentals that apply to any PLC, learn the instructions you'll actually use, then connect from your own laptop to a real MicroLogix 1100 on a bench in our lab. You write ladder logic, download it, and watch physical inputs and outputs respond. When something doesn't work you troubleshoot it the way you would in a plant — by looking at what the controller is really doing.

Along the way you'll see the same task done two ways: hardwired with relays, and in software. That comparison is the whole reason this industry moved to PLCs, and it lands differently when you've built both.

The track finishes with a traffic-light intersection — main road, cross road, and a protected left-turn arrow with proper phase timing and all-red intervals. You write the program yourself. A live view of the controller shows every lamp and every timer as your logic runs, so you know immediately whether your sequence is right.

Lab times are approximate — they are a guide to how long the hands-on part usually takes, not a limit. You can ask for more lab time whenever you need it.

About the controller we use

The MicroLogix 1100 is discontinued — Rockwell no longer sells it and points new installations at the Micro800 family. We use it anyway, deliberately.

Plants are full of controllers exactly like this one. If your job involves keeping existing equipment running, this is the hardware you'll meet, and knowing your way around it is useful on Monday morning. The fundamentals — addressing, the scan, ladder logic, going online, troubleshooting — carry to every Allen-Bradley platform regardless.
